Going an extra mile

Ezra and Thomas joined a company together a few months after their graduation from university. After a few years of work, their Manager promoted Ezra to a position of Senior Sales Manager, but Thomas remained in his entry level Junior Sales Officer position.  Thomas developed a sense of jealousy and disgruntlement, but continued working anyway. One day Thomas felt that he could not work with Ezra anymore.  He wrote his resignation letter, but before he submitted it to the Manager, he complained that Management did not value hard working staff, but only promoted only the favoured! The Manager knew that Ezra worked very hard for the years he had spent at the company; even harder than Thomas and therefore he deserved the promotion.  So in order to help Thomas to realize this, the Manager gave Thomas a task. “Go and find out if anyone is selling water melons in town?” Thomas returned and said, "yes there is someone!" The Manager asked, "how much per k...

Positives in Negatives

Image
" Positives in Negatives" A young woman was sitting at her dining table, worried about taxes to be paid, house-work to be done and to top it all, her extended family was coming over for festival lunch the next day. She was not feeling very thankful at that time. As she turned her gaze sideways, she noticed her young daughter scribbling furiously into her notebook. “My teacher asked us to write a paragraph on “Negative Thanks giving” for homework today.” said the daughter. “She asked us to write down things that we are thankful for, things that make us feel not so good in the beginning, but turn out to be good after all.” With curiosity, the mother peeked into the book. This is what her daughter wrote: “I’m thankful for Final Exams, because that means school is almost over. I’m thankful for bad-tasting medicine, because it helps me feel better. I’m thankful for waking up to al...

Ducks Quack, Eagles Soar Story

Image
Ducks Quack, Eagles Soar I was waiting in line for a ride at the airport in Pakistan. When a cab pulled up, the first thing I noticed was that the taxi was polished to a bright shine. Smartly dressed in a white shirt, black tie, and freshly pressed black slacks, the cab driver jumped out and rounded the car to open the back passenger door for me. He handed me a laminated card and said: 'I'm Abdul, your driver. While I'm loading your bags in the trunk I'd like you to read my mission statement.' Taken aback, I read the card. It said: Abdul's Mission Statement: To get my customers to their destination in the quickest, safest and cheapest way possible in a friendly environment. This blew me away. Especially when I noticed that the inside of the cab matched the outside. Spotlessly clean! As he slid behind the wheel, Abdul said, 'Would you like a cup of coffee...

Origins of some of our strange customs.

Origins of some of our strange customs. 1.WHY: Why do men’s clothes have buttons on the right while women’s clothes have buttons on the left? BECAUSE: When buttons were invented, they were very expensive and worn primarily by the rich. Since most people are right-handed, it is easier to push buttons on the right through holes on the left. Because wealthy women were dressed by maids, dressmakers put the buttons on the maid’s right! And that’s where women’s buttons have remained since. 2.WHY: Why do ships and aircraft use ‘mayday’ as their call for help? BECAUSE: This comes from the French word _m’aidez_ – meaning, ‘help me’ – and is pronounced, approximately, ‘mayday.’ 3.WHY: Why are zero scores in tennis called ‘love’? BECAUSE: In France, where tennis became popular, the round zero on the scoreboard looked like...

WHY TO HIRE 'EMOTIONALLY INTELLIGENT' PEOPLE When looking to hire new employees, people who can manage their emotions and read those of others might be better picks than people with impressive resumes.... "If I face with those two candidates, hands down I’d pick the one with emotional intelligence The reason, I explain, is that teaching people self-awareness, self management and empathy (qualities emotionally intelligent people have) is much harder than teaching business and organizational skills.   How to hire emotionally intelligent people: 1.   Get candidates to tell stories   of when they’ve been successful and not successful. Focus the conversation on relationship and people-because the skills related to people are the ones that are related to emotional intelligence (EI). 2. Talk to references.  Ask references about specific concrete behaviours they ...
